Emergent speciation by multiple 1 Dobzhansky – Muller incompatibilities
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Dobzhansky–Muller model posits that incompatibilities between alleles at different loci 5 cause speciation. However, it is known that if the alleles involved in a Dobzhansky–Muller 6 incompatibility (DMI) between two loci are neutral, the resulting reproductive isolation cannot 7 be maintained in the presence of either mutation or gene flow. Here we propose that speciation 8 can emerge through the collective effects of multiple neutral DMIs that cannot, individually, 9 cause speciation—a mechanism we call emergent speciation. We investigate emergent speciation 10 using a haploid neutral network model with recombination. We find that certain combinations 11 of multiple neutral DMIs can lead to speciation. Complex DMIs and high recombination rate 12 between the DMI loci facilitate emergent speciation. These conditions are likely to occur in 13 nature. We conclude that the interaction between DMIs may be a root cause of the origin of 14 species. 15

Genetic incompatibilities are supposed to play an important role in speciation. A general (theoretical) problem is to explain the persistence of genetic diversity after secondary contact. Previous theoretical work has pointed out that Dobzhansky-Muller incompatibilities (DMI) are not stable in the face of migration unless local selection acts on the alleles involved in incompatibility. With loc...

The Bateson-Dobzhansky-Muller (BDM) model of reproductive isolation by genetic incompatibility is a widely accepted model of speciation. Because of the exceptionally rich biological information about the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the identification of BDM incompatibilities in yeast would greatly deepen our understanding of the molecular genetic basis of reproductive isolation and ...
متن کاملThe limits to parapatric speciation: Dobzhansky-Muller incompatibilities in a continent-island model.
How much gene flow is needed to inhibit speciation by the accumulation of Dobzhansky-Muller incompatibilities (DMIs) in a structured population? Here, we derive these limits in a classical migration-selection model with two haploid or diploid loci and unidirectional gene flow from a continent to an island. We discuss the dependence of the maximum gene-flow rate on ecological factors (exogeneous...
